The province government’s innovative Punjab E-Taxi Program is poised to transform public transportation while encouraging environmentally friendly mobility and youth empowerment. This project, which was announced under the chief minister’s direction, is a big step in the direction of a more inclusive and greener Punjab in the future.
In its first phase, the Punjab E-Taxi Program will distribute 1,100 fully electric taxis across the province. These vehicles will be provided on interest-free installments, making the scheme highly accessible, especially for unemployed youth, women, and individuals in rural communities.
Environmentally Friendly Transport
The initiative’s emphasis on sustainability makes it unique. The program’s electric taxis will contribute to the fight against urban pollution by emitting no emissions and making very little noise. This shift to greener transportation is a welcome intervention as pollution levels in Punjab’s major cities, including Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi, continue to rise.
The taxis, models Honri VC20 and VC30—are being supplied in partnership with Dewan Motors. They come equipped with driving ranges of 200 km and 300 km per charge, respectively, ensuring efficient service in both urban and semi-urban routes.
Charging Infrastructure & Urban Planning
To support these vehicles, a charging network is being developed across Punjab. In Lahore, charging stations will be installed every three kilometers, with further expansion planned for other key cities. This infrastructure will make owning and operating electric taxis more practical and reliable for drivers.
Inclusive Economic Empowerment
A major highlight of the Punjab E-Taxi Program is its inclusive approach. Special consideration is being given to women, persons with disabilities, and job seekers in underdeveloped areas. This targeted effort aligns with the government’s broader vision of economic and social upliftment through sustainable initiatives.
The application procedure will be made easy and transparent, according to Punjab’s Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan. To make sure that qualified applicants are aware and inspired to apply, the government intends to start a massive awareness campaign using print, television, and social media.
Even before the official launch, the program has generated massive interest. Reports indicate that over 60,000 applications have already been received, highlighting strong public enthusiasm for this innovative offering.
